Powered Flying

We fly power models at Jurby Airfield on either the Main or Extension runways. Condition of the tarmac is generally good, but can be patchy in places.

If there is a motor racing event or other, at the main runway, sometimes at weekends, then we fly on the extension runway. Generally we fly on one or the other sites, but it is possible to fly on the extension when the main runway is in use, if you inform persons on the main runway beforehand and are using 2.4Ghz.

The main runway is entered via a locked gate (code from club) close to the karting, whereas the extension is entered off the Sandygate road, on the opposite end of the runway. There are different combinations for each. There is a sign that should be reversed, “Model Flying In Progess” on the gate, once you have entered the runway complex. Drive straight ahead through the additional gates, onto the main runway area, past the taxiing road, then turn left towards the flying site. Please wait to be beckoned down, if models are currently flying close or landing on the runway.

There are usually flyers there most days if the weather is nice and the winds are not too strong. Please read the flying site rules for the main runway and the no- fly zones. These are very strict as the main no fly zone is the Isle of Man Prison, and any overflys will be dealt with by the police. Club rules will be provided to your on request when you join or visit as a guest.

The optimal winds are less than 10mph with a direction of W or E, puts the landing straight down the runways.  If flying a glider, please land to the east or west of the cars, and land some distance away on the grass. If the weather is sunny, then you will require sunglasses as the main flying direction is South.
